Horrific video shows Spanish farms where chickens lay dead after being pumped with antibiotics

According to data from Spain's Agriculture, Fish and Food Ministry, almost 800 million chickens were slaughtered in 2018.

ANA LACASA: ‘Horrific video footage from a Spanish chicken farm shows animals pumped with so many antibiotics they appear to lay dead on the floor. Others can be seen lying on their backs and struggling to breathe as a consequence of being reared to gain weight quickly. The animal rights charity Equalia, which released the distressing images, says they show Cobb and Ross breeds which have been genetically selected to grow faster than normal.

Filmed at four different poultry farms between late 2019 and early 2020, they show birds packed into large dark barns… The farms are located in the regions of Castilla La Mancha and Murcia in central and southeastern Spain… Equalia says the chickens are likely to have been bred over a period of 41 days until they weigh around 2.2kg. Both sick and healthy chickens are given antibiotics to help them survive until their slaughter.

But because this means they cannot carry their own weight, they start lying on the ground for much of the time, leading to physical problems and malformations. This includes broken feet, a skin condition known as dermatitis and even death due to heart and lung problems… Almost 800 million chickens were slaughtered in 2018, according to data from Spain’s Agriculture, Fish and Food Ministry’.
